Tete e Tete @ Vapi- Vapi Industrial Association

On arriving at the chemical hub of Vapi, we proceeded to meet Mr. Yogesh Kabaria, the president of Vapi Industrial Association. Here we had a truly invigorating talk with him where many a issues that industries specifically the SME’s face in Vapi were highlighted. As we know the chemical cluster of Vapi has been very infamous for the pollution it has been causing. Though this is a reality what people do not talk about is the fact that the people of Vapi have taken effective measures for it like the common  effluent treatment plant at Vapi is the largest in India. Similarly from the past few years around 150 crores have been spent to combat pollution. Despite this the government has put lot of control measures which does not allow chemical cluster to expand, due to which there is increasing unemployment. Instead of just implementing control measures the government should find innovative solutions to combat it was what he suggested.

He also pointed out at the burgeoning traffic problem in Vapi, as a lot of trucks park in Vapi due to lack of space in Silvassa and Daman. Further despite the fact that the octroi duty of Vapi has been abolished, it has not been practiced as a result government benefits are still not reaching the people of Vapi due to which development has not been realised in Vapi. He also pointed out that Vapi supplies 35% of paper in India but still this industry has been neglected.
Mr. Jagat Shah with Mr. Yogesh Kabaria, President of Vapi Industrial Association

He also pointed out that today industries in Vapi including SME’s are doing their bit for the society as they are involving in a lot of CSR activities like education for adivasi girls, arrangement of group marriages, blood donation camp and free eye check ups.
Thus as the discussions came to an end a lot was understood about the industries of Vapi and we were filled with conviction to work towards finding solutions for their problems  and voice their concerns to the larger audience.

Vapi- The Chemical Hub of Gujarat

Surrounded by the beauty of the union territories of Daman and Dadar and Nagar Haveli, nestled in the lap of the Damanganga river lies the city of Vapi in Gujarat. Vapi holds an important place as it is the only city connecting Daman & Diu and Dadra-nagar haveli.
As Vapi enjoys a close proximity to major cities like Mumbai, Surat and Ahmedabad it has developed manifold over the years. With time the 21 km stretch of Vapi, Daman and Silvasaa have amalgamated into a single industrial estate. A lot of textile giants like Alok industries, Welspun Terry Towels, Century Textiles, GHCL and Raymonds Limited have their presence in Vapi but Vapi’s industrial inclination is more towards the chemical industry. Vapi houses a large number of chemical plants like that of Bayer Vapi Pvt Ltd,United Phosphorus, Themis Chemicals etc.It further boasts of the Vapi Industrial Estate spread over an area of 11.4 square kilometers, which was was established by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation. The industrial estate has the presence of a large number of companies but the majority of the companies are small scale which are acting as the beacons of economic growth in India in the present days.Vapi today is also carving a niche for itself in the world map as it exports most of the iconic Wimbledon towels.
With the considerable presence of a large number of industrial clusters in Vapi, there is a concern regarding pollution but adequate steps are being taken to combat this. For example the Vapi Industries Association have established a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CEPT) which is one of a kind and is one of the largest in India.

Hence, with an aim to help the burgeoning small scale  industries we rightly set up our camp  next at Vapi, the abode of small scale industries.

Chai pe Charcha @ Surat- Day 1 of Mentor on Road

Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction”- John C. Crosby

As the SUV reached its first stop on this eventful journey of 65 days we were greeted by the warmness of the scintillating city of Surat, the city of diamonds and textiles. Mr. Amit Shah, the local mentor of Surat joined the journey as we proceeded to meet, discuss, analyze and mentor the SME’s operating in the textile sector in Surat. The meet was organized by New Textile Market Association under the leadership of Mr. Devkishan Manghani, Chairman of committee on textiles, Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI). As the brainstorming session with the various textile companies proceeded forward, many a pertinent issues were raised. It was observed that a  lot of manufactures desire to make their presence felt in the global scenario and desire to acquaint themselves with the various facets of overseas marketing. There was also an overwhelming desire that loans should be provided without collateral or security and at a lower rate for the textile industry. The air of the room was rift with suggestions, new ideas as many individuals voiced their opinions. “Complete tax exemption for garments whose price ranges to Rs 450” similar to the tax exemption given to other industrial segments like leather footwear was an idea that echoed across the room.
Mr Jagat Shah, Chief Mentor and Mr Amit Shah, Local mentor for Surat

Today as we know that technology is undergoing rapid strides and there is a need for all industrial clusters to acquaint with the latest technology, the textile companies of Surat to voiced a similar sentiment, as they desired that showrooms showcasing the latest technologies emerging in the  textile domain should be set up by the government. The need to provide “manufacturer status” to textile traders who manufacture through value addition was highlighted. As the deliberations continued certain tasks that could be carried out to address these issues and help the textile SME’s were identified. It was analyzed that skill based training should be provided to the SME’s working in textile sector and the R&D should be strengthened to develop quality goods so that they realize their global exposure dreams. In a recent report by Google India it was ascertained that online fashion retail market will reach around Rs 2.22 lakh crores by 2020, in a similar light the need to bring online sales to the forte for textile sector was recognized. It was also decided to bring forward the idea to have a textile commissioner office in Surat and to work towards developing Surat’s infrastructure particularly transportation facilities like airports, active port etc to make Surat a viable destination from around the globe and develop trade further.

Mentoring at Tulsi Grocery Store

With all this humdrum of life slowly fading by and the  sun starting its downward journey heralding the end of a long day, it  was not the end of the day for the us as we set out on yet another task.  Carrying the message that digitization would enable to reach a larger audience I along with Mr. Amit Shah and Mr. Shriram Singh then visited Tulsi grocery store whom we mentored on benefits of going online by forming alliances with a online store. So, with this the long day finally came to an end, a day filled with deliberations, brainstorming and a hope for brighter days we finally took the much needed siesta ready to embark on their journey for the next day.

So here the journey begins.....

“ A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

As the SUV entered the gates of Indus University today, it was beaming bright ready to start its long and eventful  journey around the nation. So here started the beginning of the ambitious project Mentor on Road. The flag off event of the project Mentor on road was graced by the presence of many dignitaries like Dr S.B. Sharma, Executive President of Indus University which is the education partner, Mr P.R Joshi, Assistant Settlement Commissioner, Mr Shailesh Bhandari, Managing Director of Electrotherm which is the infrastructure partner, Mr Manish Vora, Senior President and Regional Business Head of Yes Bank which is the banking partner, Mr Shriram Singh, Senior Director of Reliance Wealth, Ms. Sangeeta Taneja from United States Commercial Services ( USCS ), Mr Shreyas Sheth, President of USIIC, Ahmedabad Chapter which is the international partner and Dr Shashi Tandon, Director of Indus University. Further the presence of an enthusiastic crowd consisting of faculties, students and budding entrepreneurs filled the air with an aura of excitement and enthusiasm.

Dr S.B Sharma lauded the vision behind mentor on road and remarked that there was a lot one could learn from the mammoth of this project. “ We are not efficient at many instances in our life but we do not accept it, so at times we should accept our weakness and work towards it” was the message that Mr Shriram Singh gave the students. As the event progressed all the dignitaries but seemed to echo one common message and reinforce one fact that how today it was of utmost importance to harness more SME’s in our nation and hence to mentor them in various domains like marketing, technology and finance where such firms faced the most problems. “ To make the Make in India concept a reality SME’s need to develop” was what Mr Manish Vora highlighted. Mr Shreyas Sheth correctly pointed out and advised the students to shun off the “chalta hai” attitude and work towards precision and perfection.
The Flag off of Mentor on Road

“As I traveled around the country on family trips I always came across budding entrepreneurs and SME’s in various clusters and it was then that I visualized this idea of a project mentoring the SME’s and start ups across the nation” with this i started to throw some light on the project. Make in India concept has invited a lot of criticism largely because people have not understood its true meaning. “ To be able to produce the 180 non oil goods that we currently import” is the main intent of Make in India. The crowd listened in rapt attention as I further highlighted that today some companies are achieving this goal and these companies are not huge corporates but they are SME’s hailing from small towns and cities and that if we persevere we too can make this possible. Highlighting the importance of regional linguistics would be another important objective as I meet the young crowd across the nation as the regional language and its existence is very important.

The project Mentor on Road then truly kicked off as  there was then an interactive mentoring session for budding entrepreneurs from Indus University. Mr Siddhant Doshi an engineering student dreamed to enter the still latent market of home automation in India but like most he was afraid if he could make it big or survive as today India is inundated with startups and if a startup bubble would build in India. “ A bubble forms and then it burst and then reforms” and today India in all forms has the correct ecosystem for startups with these words the dignitaries enthused Siddhant whose face seemed to gleam brightly on hearing these words. Future entrepreneurs like Miss Khiloni Patel and team who wish to build an application that enables one to choose tables and book seats in restaurants and Mr Jagdish Tarbundiya and Mr Saumil Dixit who have already built and tested the prototype of an air filter using Electrostatics Precipitator for Boiler, like most budding entrepreneurs were in the dilemma as to how they should give wings to their dreams further and venture in the market.  I informed them that Jack Ma, Founder of Alibaba.com wishes to invest around 1 billion in Indian startups but still only a few have approached him so the market is ready but they need to be ready with their reports covering all details and meet such individuals who are ready to invest was the message that resonated loud and clear. Finally Mr Nisarg Shah who has already formed his company Global Techvision which offers IT Services, online marketing services & home automation software, was contemplating as to how he should expand further in the country. The sentiment that seemed to echo with this query was that “Quality is king” he should aim at providing the best quality services which will build his company name and then by identifying possible financing options he should expand.

As the event came to an end it marked the first step of the journey of a thousand mile that the project mentor on road was just about to embark upon. As the green flag unfurled in the hands of Mr P.R. Joshi and Dr S.B. Sharma it symbolised the start of an escapade, which like the colour green symbolises would bring growth and hope for the burgeoning SME’s across the nation. Thus started the journey of Mentor on Road with its first stop at the diamond capital of the world and the textile capital of India, Surat.

Surat - The Diamond Capital of the World and the Textile Capital of India

"A diamond is a chunk of charcoal that is good under pressure"- Henry A. Kissinger

Serenaded on the banks of the river Tapti (Tapi) stands the diamond capital of the world Surat in the state of Gujarat. According to Hindu beliefs Surat traces its existence to around the latter part of 15th century when it was known as Suryapur and was founded by the Brahmin Gopi. Just like a charcoal becomes a scintillating diamond under stress, Surat too has evolved in the same manner. It has seen many downfalls in its past like the ravage by the Portuguese empire, natural calamities like floods and epidemics like plaque but Surat like a phoenix has always risen above the ashes and today has a GDP growth rate of 11.5% which is the fastest in India and has been awarded the “best city” by the  Annual Survey of India's City-Systems (ASICS) in 2013.
As one walks down the street of Surat one can sense a feeling of history and modernity as one sees a moat that divides the historical houses from the modern day tall structures. Surat has a potpourri of culture due to its diverse population consisting of Gujaratis, Marwaris, Sindhi, Oriya, Marathi, Telegu and a sizeable population of Parsis and Jews.Surat which is often referred as the city of Kubera, the wealth God rightly gets this title from the enterprising nature of Surati people. There are instances as early as 19th century when Surati people were involved in export to increase their revenue which is a testimony to their business acumen and their risk taking ability.  Surat is further known for its cuisine and as the fragrance of the spicy Surati cuisine wafts the air from the many popular food stalls popularly known as laaris and one gorges down in these cuisines  the popular saying “Surat nu Jaman ane Kashi nu Maran” (eat in Surat and die in Kashi) stands true.  Surat boasts of a literacy rate of around 89% which is higher than the national average. It has many  institutes like Sardar Vallabhai National Institute of Technology and Indian Diamond Institute being prominent among them. Surat is also a popular tourist spot and offers varied places of interest right from the beautiful beaches of Dumas to a tryst with history in the form of the Surat fort, the Dutch garden, the Jawaharlal Nehru Garden etc.
The popularity of Surat largely lies in the fact that it is a major economic hub in India which can attributed to the fact that Surat is a port city which offers vast economic potential and together with the enterprising nature of Surati people it makes for a ideal concoction for business. According to a study conducted by City Mayors Foundation, an international think tank on urban affairs Surat is the 4th fastest developing city in the world. Surat with a GDP of around $40 billion ranks 9th in India. Further with the launch of the project Diamond Research and Mercantile( Dream City) it is expected that the GDP of Surat will catapulate  to new heights and it will rank 4th in India by 2020. Surat is most popular for its diamonds and textiles. Surat is rightly called the diamond capital of the world as almost 90% of rough diamond cutting and polishing of the world is done here. Further 90% of the total diamond export from India is from Surat.  Surat is further known for producing world class synthetic textiles but it is popular for its silk and hence Surat is also known as the textile and silk capital of India. It is also marked by the presence of many industrial units like the Reliance Petrochemicals, Essar’s steel plant, ONGC gas processing unit, L&T engineering unit etc. Still Surat like a huge falcon is spreading its wings in other quarters as well as today it is making progress in information technology with many Domestic IT SME’s coming up here and with the recent Microsoft CityNext initiative this is further expected to grow.

Hence, as Surat carves a prominent place for itself in the world map it brings about a lot of opportunities for trade and business. Today Surat offers an excellent ecosystem for new businesses to come and for more entrepreneurs to come to limelight.  Thus, with an aim to further help and be as a catalyst in the path of economic development of Surat by helping the budding entrepreneurs and the SME’s there the project Mentor on Road rightly starts its journey from the fastest developing city Surat.
