Social Kahani - SOS Village | Jaipur

2nd December 2015
Visited SOS children's village in Jaipur on 2nd December 2015

They are doing wonderful work for underserved segments of our society. 10 orphan children live in one home under a mother who is either a widow or a separated woman. So it serves both well. Children from one month to 23 years of age live here. They go to different schools in town. They live like any family & the mother has monthly budgets to manage the home. Mother gets a salary & pension. They have 14 houses with 10 children each & each house has a mother.

Children take aptitude tests to chose a career. They have one counsellor for every 50 children. Some children have become Air Force officers, some air hostesses, some are in London working as chartered accountants & then these children invite their mothers, who have taken care of them all life, to live with them. What a way to return the favours.
After age of 13, the boys shift to a separate campus called youth campus run by SOS village.

SOS village's major challenges are challenges of Funding gap, need for mothers,  Settlement of children & awareness within Jaipur. Though this school is existing since 1974, even many jaipur residents don't know about it.

Another issue related to Government matter is that SOS village is registered under JJ act which has several limitations. And because their model is innovative & unique where orphan children live like a normal family, they want to get registered as a kinship care or as a group foster care institution. We shall explore ways to do that.
We have promised them to arrange funding from India & abroad for this good cause.

They are looking for Rupees 19,000 ( US$ 300 ) per child for one full year for food, clothing, school books & school fees. Even one child support is welcome by them.

Let's help them.
